Can't this bad effect be used for good?
Submitted by art on Thu, 2008-08-21 08:11.
Over the years I've seen various reports like this one that claims a particular drug causes MS in the person who takes it. While this is a terrible side effect, couldn't we use this information to create better animal models and understand what might be going wrong to cause the disease in those of us who got it naturally?

Since this is the first i
Since this is the first i have ever heard of this, I'm speechless. I don't even know what questions to ask or whether I should be upset that some avenue that should be persued has not been. I always assumed that my MS was a result of the "luck of the draw", Not that someone gave me something that caused it. Now I'm wondering about all the information i've read about vaccines and such causing MS. Maybe it was the Swine flu vaccine the goverment was nice enough to give me for free in the 70's after all. Or maybe one of the vaccines they gave me when I became an officer in the military. This is really quite upsetting.
So we are looking at a web
So we are looking at a web page from WDDTY that is reporting this finding which it is attributing to "Source: FDA Website".
Has anyone tracked this back to an actual report from the FDA website? I'd love to read the actual findings.
I don't want to be overly skeptical, but this particular report sounds a bit like a "Kevin Trudeau" report.
Other independent studies and findings anyone???
Multiple Sclerosis is listed
Multiple Sclerosis is listed as a possible side effect of Enbrel here:
http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/safety/2008/Jul_PI/Enbrel_MG_Jun2008.pdf
I looked *quickly* on pubmed, searching the terms: "etanercept sclerosis" to see a few mentions of this.
one example:
Papp KA. - The safety of etanercept for the treatment of plaque psoriasis.
Ther Clin Risk Manag. 2007 Jun;3(2):245-58.
"Rare but serious events: activation of latent tuberculosis, multiple sclerosis, lymphoma, and others, have been observed but have questionable or yet to be defined association with therapeutic uses of etanercept."
Obviously much more work to be done here.
PubMed reported a bit more
PubMed reported a bit more information in a release today that also links back to the FDA. This one does not specifically mention MS, it does mention the increased cancer risk found in the SEAS study - which is consistent with the earlier report.
Here is the link to the PubMed page that reports this: http://www.docguide.com/news/content.nsf/news/852571020057CCF6852574AC0077F56B
At last- they are admitting
At last- they are admitting that MS is caused by outside agents. This is a beginning.
